What's the first thing you should do before even attempting to start a business?

Research.

I can't say enough about how I wish I'd done even more research within my industry and compared markets before I got into art and publishing. Even when you think it's enough it never is. We are always learning. Industries are constantly changing and you have to keep your mind open and constantly feed it.

That being said researching is important. This applies to anyone who is interested in starting their own business, interested in learning something new, discovered a hidden talent or even just a hobbyist. Whether it is consulting, arts, food, books, games, apparel or something even bigger just knuckle down, and DO YOUR RESEARCH.

When you research, you are creating a foundation that will be stable enough to build on. Without that initial step, your business could collapse before it even makes it through it's first year. Yes, you could get lucky, and make a big break, but will you be prepared if that break makes a sudden u-turn?
